A Night to Remember
The year was seventeen-eleven and all was calm and peaceful in the beautiful country of Romania, a country that was reined by King Dmitry Vladimir, his wife Queen Christiana and their only son Christopher, heir to the throne. Each year on Christopher’s birthday, the King and Queen would throw a grand ball in his honor and would invite not only their Kingdom but other Kingdoms from all over. Each year was special, and different, yet this year was going to be the most grand of them all. Tonight the Crown Prince would turn the age of twenty-one, the year in which marked adulthood.
“Now, Christopher, make sure you dance with all the young ladies. It would be improper if you only chose a select few, as being the host of this evening’s affair.” Queen Christiana said in her regal, elegant voice as she straightened her son’s coat.
“Mother, I know, you’ve told me this around a hundred times in the past week, twenty of those times just today.” Christopher said as he looked at himself in the large golden mirror. He knew that tonight was different, he had known this all year. He knew that tonight he would turn twenty-one and that would mean he was eligible to be married in the upcoming months or within the next few years. In a way his birthday ball was always a bittersweet event. On the upside, he was given the excuse to dance with any young female of his choosing, and that wasn’t too bad at all. He had a few times been called the “Flirtatious Prince” and other times the “Playful Prince” just because he had played with a few young noble girls’ hearts. On the downside, he was in no way ready or even wanting to be attached to one woman for the rest of his life. He was too young, and he wanted to explore more of the world before being tied down to family and duty. He only wished that his parents and advisors could finally see that. Nonetheless, he always put on the handsome smile that he was known for, and always put on a good show for his family and for the people.
“Well, my boy, may I say you look very handsome tonight. All the ladies will definitely want a glimpse of you.” Queen Christiana said as she turned to face her son once more before looking making final adjustments of her own attire in the mirror, running her hand down to smooth the top of her dark red ball gown, then adjusting her elegant crown.
“Mother, tonight will be fine. It’s just like all my other birthday balls in the past.” Christopher said as he placed a strong hand on her shoulder.
“Yes, but we have more people here this year, and more from other Kingdoms.”
“That’s your own fault at planning, Mother. If it were just me, I would’ve just kept it just my friends.”
“Christopher, we had to. You will become a very eligible bachelor tonight. Oh where is your father. We are going to be late.” Queen Christiana said as she hastily walked towards one of the servants.
“George, will you please see if His Majesty is finally ready?” Queen Christiana said to the older manservant at the door. Who quickly bowed and set off to find the King.
“Mother, it will be fine. We aren’t late, we are never late, and you always tell me that everyone is simply just early.” Christopher said as she went over towards the window to see all the arriving carriages and young ladies entering the castle alongside their escorts.
“Ah, I see your cousin Morgan has arrived.” Queen Christiana said softly as she looked out the window beside her soon. “Oh, and there’s Princess of Spain.” She said as she pointed her out for her son.
“Make sure you dance with her, Chris.” She said softly as she heard hard footsteps entering the room.
“I promise I would dance with all the ladies, now please stop pestering me about it Mother.” Christopher said as he turned to greet his father.
“Ah, isn’t this a lovely family. My dear you look divine.” King Dmitry said as he took his wife’s hands and kissed her on both of her cheeks.
“You’re Grace is much too kind.” Queen Christiana bowed deeply towards her husband.
“Ah, Christopher, my how you have grown. It seems only yesterday, you were a tiny lad trying to convince me you could fly.” King Dmitry said as he shook his son’s hand.
“You’re Majesties; everyone is in the ballroom and waits for you.” Sir Richard, King Dmitry’s most trusted Guard and servant said at the door.
“Ah thank you Richard. Well, the people must not wait any longer.” He said as he led his Royal family towards the ballroom.
As they approached the grand ballroom doors the sound of trumpets sounded, announcing the arrival of the Royal family. Then with two thuds of a staff, the grand ballroom doors opened, with the announcer formally announcing: “His Majesty, King Dmitry. Her Majesty, Queen Christiana. His Royal Highness, Christopher, Crown Prince of Romania.” As they entered through the doors and walked towards the thrones, everyone bowed gracefully until the Royal family took their places in front of their thrones.
“Greetings my fellow friends, family, and subjects. Many of you have come from near and far in honor of my son’s twenty-first birthday, and this I am truly honored. Tonight we celebrate a grand milestone, as my son reaches adulthood. So if you will, raise your goblets and glasses in honor for my son, Crown Prince Christopher. May you enjoy tonight’s festivities, enjoy good company, find the love of your life, and live a long life of happiness. To Prince Christopher.” King Dmitry said as he turned, raising his own goblet to toast to his son.
“To Prince Christopher.” The crowed echoed the King as they raised their glasses and toasted the Prince.
“I am truly honored, may the ball begin.” Prince Christopher announced, starting the ball.
Not but several moments later, the Prince began his duty as the host and began dancing with all the young eligible ladies. One after another, he tried to make small talk, asking where they were from, how old they were, who their parents were, and before he knew it, there was another girl in his arms. Several times he would take a break and laugh with his friends and close cousins at some of his previous or future dancing partners.
“How was dancing with the Princess of Spain, Chris?” Prince Philip, Christopher’s cousin from England said as he pointed to the young beauty.
“Ah Isabella, she was very graceful, but she’s not for me. You should dance with her though.” Christopher said honestly. He had danced with her a little bit longer than the other girls, but only to make his mother happy. He had no intention in pursuing a relationship with the Spanish Princess; she was just too boring for him. He wanted to find someone that would capture his attention instantly that he could carry on a conversation with. He wanted someone, who he could be best friends with, someone who would never be bored with his adventurous lifestyle; however he really didn’t wish to settle down just yet.
“Well, I think I will if you don’t want her.” Philip said with a smirk on his face as he made his way to dance with the Spanish Princess.
“Ah, there you are Christopher. Why aren’t you dancing? There are still several young ladies that you have yet to dance with, and why is Prince Philip dancing with Princess Isabella of Spain, and you aren’t. You two were making a fine couple, if I can be so bold to say.” Queen Christiana said softly to her son as she looked out over the dancing crowd.
“Mother, I was just taking a break. I will get to the rest of the ladies soon, please stop worrying. As for Princess Isabella, she was very charming, and graceful. I even danced with her for a few moments longer than the rest of the ladies tonight. However, she is not for me, she’s much too boring, perhaps Philip will have better luck.” Christopher said as he watched his cousin dance with the Spanish Princess who was in a dark red ball gown.
Just as Prince Christopher was going to begin dancing with another young noble lady, the trumpets sounded, announcing a late arrival. All eyes drifted to the grand ballroom doors, yet so many people were in the way the Prince couldn’t see who it was.
“You’re Grace, may I present her highness, Princess Rosalyn.” Sir Richard said as he stepped to the side, revealing the dark haired beauty. As soon as Christopher locked eyes with her, he was lost. Rosalyn had long dark hair that flowed loosely around her face and down her back, definitely out of the normal style. She wore an elegant black ball gown that was fitted tight around her bust and torso, but made her pale ivory skin more translucent looking. Yet, as he stared at her, at a loss of words, he could think just who this young lady was and why he had never seen her before.
“My lady.” Christopher said softly as he bowed deeply towards the new guest.
“Princess Rosalyn, I don’t believe I’ve seen you at Court, who are your parents?” Queen Christiana asked softly as she noticed the instant attraction between the young princess and her son.
“I am the only daughter of the late Prince Philip and Princess Alexandra of Italy, your Majesty.” Rosalyn said as she bowed gracefully to the floor. All eyes still locked on the Princess and the Royal family.
“Oh, I knew them quiet well when I was a younger girl. I was sorry to hear of their deaths, several years ago. However, I didn’t know they had a daughter.” Queen Christiana said as she leaned to kiss the Princess’s cheeks, feeling the coolness of her sweet smelling skin.
“My dear, you are cold. Would you like a coat?” Queen Christiana asked as Sir Richard began taking off his own for the princess.
“No need, I’m sure Prince Christopher would like to ask me to dance, that will surely warm me up in no time at all.” She said with a soft, elegant, smile.
“Oh but of course; my Princess, may I have this next dance?” Prince Christopher said as he held out his hand towards Rosalyn.
“I would be honored.” She said as she took his warm masculine hand, following him as he led them towards the middle of the dance floor. Everyone created a wide circle, letting the couple dance alone, so that they could gossip, and all wondering who this Princess was.
As Christopher danced along with the music, he couldn’t help but to wonder how he knows this young girl. He was sure she had felt the connection instantly as well, but he couldn’t place her face with a certain time or location.
“Why do you stare at me so, my lord?” Rosalyn asked softly as she smiled into his dark eyes.
“You, you’ve captured my eyes, I’m afraid. I feel that we have met some where before.” Christopher said as he spun the princess gracefully.
“I feel the same, you’re Grace. Yet, I don’t believe we have.” She said elegantly with her perfect red lips.
“May I ask how old you are my lady.”
“Let’s just say I feel a lot older than I look.” She said mysteriously, which only captivated Christopher’s attention and thoughts more. He had to get to know this girl. She was the one that he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, that was the only conclusion he had about the powerful connection he felt towards this beautiful princess.
“Would you like to take a turnabout in the gardens, Princess?” He asked, as he never left his eyes from hers. He couldn’t explain his feelings; all he knew was that he had to go somewhere, alone with her.
“I would be honored, my lord.” She said as she bowed gently ending the dance. She took his hand as he led them off the dance floor and towards the gardens. Perhaps people were whispering, perhaps the music was still going on, perhaps his parents were calling his name, yet he did not know, everything seemed silent and dull to him except this intriguing woman.
“May we sit my lord?” She asked as they came towards a bench on the far side of the dark garden.
“Of course, want ever you want, it is yours my lady.” He said quickly as he sat next to her on the bench.
“Whatever I want, my Prince?” She said seductively.
“Anything, name it and it shall be yours. This I swear to you on my life.” He said as he stared into her dark, captivating eyes.
“And if I want you as my King for all eternity?” She asked.
“Then you shall have it.” The young prince said again quickly.
“And what would you give up in order to have me, and to be my King?” She asked softly as she leaned closer to him, smelling his masculine scent.
“I would give up my entire life, my family, my kingdom for you.” He replied and with a smile she pressed her soft luscious lips against his.
The Prince was so wrapped up in kissing the young beautiful princess that he didn’t notice the dozens of dark shadows approaching windows and doors of the Castle and ballroom. It wasn’t until he heard the sound of a shrilling scream that he broke the kiss and looked towards the castle, to see hooded figures attacking the guests, spilling dark red blood over the walls, the windows, and the floor.
“What? What’s happening, we must get back.” He said as he stood up quickly, drawling his sword, as he thought about a plan to enter the castle unnoticed.
“Do not fret my Princess, I won’t let any harm come to you.” He said as he helped the princess up.
“My King, you do not have to worry about me, for all of this is for you.” She said as she stood in front of him.
“What? How dare you.” He said as he ran back towards the doors of the ballroom, hearing the scream of horror from all the people he loved and cared for. Just as he entered the ballroom his eyes locked with his mother’s who had a sword against her throat. His eyes quickly glancing at his father’s dead body draped over his chair.
“Mother!” He said loudly as he made his way towards her, but it was too late. The hooded figure sliced her neck spilling her blood over the floor, in front of him.
“No!!!” He cried out as he finally reached the hooded figure, their swords clashing together.
“My King, please. Do not fight me; I am not your enemy.” The hooded figure said deeply as he knocked Christopher’s sword out of his hands.
“What?” It was then that he turned to see the horror laid out before him. Everyone that he had ever known and loved was dead, except for him. All the hooded figures that had caused this massacre knelt before him, heads bowed, and swords in front of each.
“Who...who are you? What do you want?” Christopher said with a shaky voice, trying to keep his emotions together, so he could focus. He would not mourn now, every second counted. He had to understand why they only left him alive.
“My King, this is what you said you wanted out in the garden and we are your humble servants.” Princess Rosalyn said softly as she approached closer towards Christopher.
“You…you did this. I will kill you for this.” Christopher said loudly as he raised his sword towards the princess and struck her through the abdomen. She gasped, but then smiled as he pulled out his sword, which was clean with no blood. Her skin as perfect as ever, as he focused at where the sword had entered.
“What…what are you? What do you want?” He stuttered out, now more afraid than ever before.
“You, my lord.” She said as she came closer to him, kissing his lips softly before circling around him.
“We, wish to serve you King Vladimir for all eternity.” She said as she kissed his neck, before sinking her sharp teeth into his skin, draining his blood.
“AHHHHHH” He cried out for a few seconds before he collapsed on the floor, his heart beating slower and slower every minute that passed, until finally he knew that he was dead just. Yet, if he was dead, then why he was aware of what was happening. Was this heaven? He began to wonder as he opened his eyes staring up at Rosalyn who was smiling with bloody lips and teeth.
“What…what did you do to me?” He asked with a shaky voice.
“I have given you the kiss of immortality. Now we can serve you for all eternity. Now you can be with me for all eternity, just like you wanted.” Rosalyn said as she helped Christopher up towards his feet giving him a deep kiss.
“Why? What? What am I?” He asked as he felt himself becoming stronger with each second that passed.
“We have chosen you to be our King, King of all Vampires.” She said as she bowed gracefully towards Christopher.
Christopher glanced down at the bowed princess, his maker, then his gaze fell upon all the now men who now had their hoods off, still bowed towards him. This was his new life. This was his punishment for giving into happiness, for wanting to be with a woman who had cursed him for all eternity. He felt sick, yet at the same time he knew that he could not change the past. He would grieve for the rest of his existence for his friends and family, whose lives ended tonight. However he vowed as he glanced at his new kingdom, he would find a cure for him and his new people from this abomination that they all were. However long it took, he would find a cure, and once he did, he would get his vengeance.

CHAPTER 1
The Beginning of the End
301 Years Later
People say that when a young person graduates high school that it’s a form of rite of passage into the rest of the world. Today was that day and Karolenia couldn’t be any more excited than she was in the backseat of her parents’ SUV heading towards the Carolina Coliseum to graduate after four long years of high school.
“Karo, we are just so proud of you. Four years just flew by, didn’t it?” Karolenia heard her mother say from the front passenger seat.
“Yeah it really did. I can’t wait. I want to get pictures with Hannah and Abby; they said they are already there, and that it’s a madhouse.” Karolenia said as she looked down at her phone, responding to a text message and updating her status on the social media profile page of Facebook.
“Honey, we are almost there, savor this moment, you only get one high school graduation. You don’t want to rush it.” Her mother said looking back at her daughter through the visor mirror as she retouched her lips with some gloss.
Moments later the Ford SUV pulled into the already full parking lot, and Karolenia’s heart began to race with excitement, as she looked onward to the large columns of the building, and the dozens of black caps and robes that walked to the entrance. She couldn’t help but sigh as she realized that today would be the last day that they would all be together in one place, for the rest of their lives, and that this truly was a huge milestone, something that she was just now finally grasping.
“Okay, love you mom, love you dad. Gotta head on in and get lined up. I’ll find you afterwards, promise.” Karolenia said as she started to rush out the car as soon as it parked.
“Wait just one second young lady.” She heard her father say from the car, making her turn around instantly despite her body wanting to be inside with all her friends.
“What? Dad I need to get inside.” Her impatient voice began to come out.
“We just wanted to get a picture really quick with our baby girl, before she graduates from high school. You’ll live if you’re a few seconds late; I promise you.” He said as he took out the camera, and huddled them close, putting Karolenia in the middle, and snapped a close head shot photograph of the three of them. Karolenia rolled her eyes as he finished up, and huffed.
“Okay, are you done? I really need to get inside.” She said impatiently.
“Yes, yes, go. We’ll meet you afterwards.” She heard her dad say as she rushed off towards the coliseum’s entrance, where all of her classmates were gathering.
As soon as she entered, all she could see where teachers in black robes directing other students with black robes and caps, followed by the sounds of teachers explaining how the proceeding was to work. This was it, she thought to herself, in just a little over an hour, I would be a high school graduate, finally.
“Karo! There you are! We’ve been looking all over for you! Isn’t this exciting? Oh hold on get together. Hey Mike, can you take a quick picture of all of us please.” Hannah Kelmore, one of Karolenia’s best friends, said to her while Abby Monroe and Rachel Lovelace quickly took their normal places like every posed picture of the four of them.
“Uh yeah sure. Smile.” Mike Gilmore, one of the many high school football players that had been in Hannah’s and Karolenia’s homeroom since they began high school, said as he took Hannah’s phone and snapped a picture of the four best friends huddled together.
“Um here ya go, and you know it’s bound to be a great picture since I took it, right?” Mike said with a cocky grin as he handed Hannah back her phone.
“Ah, we’ll be the judge of that Mike.” Abby said with a grin that she always had for Mike since freshman year.
“Aw it is good, thanks so much. Oh and congrats Mike!” Hannah said with a smile as they all took turns glancing at the picture.
“Yeah y’all too.” Mike said as he turned back to his own group of friends he was gathered around.
“Alright, alright people, get in your correct lines, we are about to begin.” The voice of Mrs. Grant Karolenia’s senior year English class teacher rang out as she passed by with other teachers, getting everyone in their proper positions and lines.
“I’ll see you later tonight.” Hannah said quickly as she gave Karolenia a hug and rushed off to her spot in line. Tonight, would be the first official party of the summer and she couldn’t wait for it. She had so many plans to discuss with Hannah, Abby, and Rachel; like beach trips, more summer parties, possibly driving across the country to California, something that they have always wanted to do since they were all little.
Moments later, she was walking with the rest of her classmates, all two hundred twenty-seven of them. Every single person dressed in black caps and gowns, despite the few accessories, like golden sashes or cords, honoring those who participated in certain activities. She couldn’t believe she and the rest of them were finally here, in this moment, a moment that she’s dreamed about since the day she started kindergarten, and as she finally sat in her assigned seat she looked up to the crowd trying to find her family amongst the hundreds of faces, yet couldn’t. As the ceremony went on the time came when row by row stood up and names were finally being called out, and as the time finally came as her row stood up, and it was her turn to cross the stage.
“Miss Karoenia Rose Calhoun, graduate of honors.” She heard the voice of her school’s vice president speak, and as she started to cross the stage to get her diploma, she could only think of two things while hearing several people cheering for her, “smile, and for goodness sake DON’T TRIP!” Seconds later, she was back at her seat, and watched the rest of her classmates, while listening to her excited heart beat a mile a minute, at the fact that this was it, she graduated from high school, and she was now officially able to go to the College of Charleston, the school she’s been dreaming about going to ever since she visited Folly Beach during a family vacation when she was little.
“Congrats to the Irmo High School senior class graduates of 2012, you finally made it!” The principal spoke the final words, and at that the music played and hats were thrown, they were all now officially done with high school.
“Karo, I’m going to miss you. It’s been so fun being in all our classes together.” Alexandra, the captain of the cheerleading squad, said with a huge grin as she hugged Karo.
“Um, yeah it has. Good luck next year!” Karolenia said with a small smile, she and Alexandra never really spoke to each other in the past, they didn’t have anything against one another, they were just two completely different people and in two totally different cliques.
One by one they all walked in a line and went outside, and just like Alexandra, more and more classmates of Karolenia, whether she spoke to or not, hugged her, got pictures with her, and wished each other good luck. The graduation high was in everyone, and Karolenia, just enjoyed it while it lasted. She personally couldn’t wait to just be with her own group of friends and start officially planning this summer’s plans and trips.
“Karo! Karolenia!” She heard her mother call out amongst the huge crowd of families and high school graduates.
“Mom! Over here!” Karolenia called out as she made her way towards her parents.
“Oh we are so proud of you!” Her mother said as she gave Karolenia a hug.
“Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun! Hey! Oh isn’t this just so exciting! You haven’t seen my parents have you?” Hannah said as she gave them a hug and looked for her own parents.
“Yeah they are making their way over here now. Oh just look at you two, get together for a picture, and where’s Abby and Rachel.” Karolenia heard her mother say as she took a few more pictures.
“Mom. Dad.” Hannah said as her own parents finally made it to the small gathering.
“Frank, Helen, good to see ya.” Karolenia heard her dad say as she shook their hands and more hugs were given out.
“Good to see ya Matt and Beth.” Hannah’s dad said with a smile.
“Hey congrats to everyone. Sorry to rush but we have reservations at a restaurant, but we’ll see you tonight.” Helen said with a smile.
“Yes, see you all then..” Karolenia’s dad said quickly. “Now we need to get to our own reservations.”
“So, Karo, your mother and I would like to give you your big graduation gift now.” Her dad said at the lunch table. He took Karolenia’s mother’s hand after she passed a gift bag over to Karolenia.
“What? I thought y’all already gave me my graduation present? And I love the laptop.” Karolenia said as she thought back to her brand new Mac at home, sitting still in the Apple box.
“Yes well, we know this is something you’ve always wanted to do with your friends, but well, oh go on open your present before I give away the surprise.” He said with a smile.
Karolenia slowly took out the colorful paper from the bag, and inside was a travel book and a card envelope, a card that felt like it held more than just a card. She took out the travel book which read “Across Europe Travel Guide”, Karolenia’s eyes widen, and as she quickly took out the card, she barely read what was written, she was more focused on the plane ticket, and passport.
“I’m going to Europe!” She said with a huge smile.
“Actually we’re all going to Europe.” Her mother said with a big grin.
“Oh my gosh, thank you so much. Ahhh wait until I tell Hannah and them.” Karolenia said.
“Yeah, here’s the thing about this Karo, we know you wanted to spend the summer with your girls, but well, this is really our last family trip that we are going to be able to do like this. So, the flight actually takes off tomorrow. We’ll have to leave the party a little early tonight.” Her dad said with a worried look.
“Oh it’s totally fine. We can always hang when I get back, I’m going to freaking Europe! Thank you so much y’all.”
“You’re welcome.” Karolenia’s dad said.
The rest of the day flew by in Karolenia’s mind, and before she knew it she was walking inside Hannah’s house for the big post Graduation party.
“There you are!” Hannah excitedly took Karolenia’s hand and led her to the kitchen where Abby and Rachel and a few others of their friends were already gathered. All night they enjoyed the party, and shared graduation present stories.
“No way Europe! Take me with you please!” Rachel said when Karolenia told them about the summer to Europe gift from her parents.
“You’re going to have so much fun, Jeff did that a few years ago after high school, and he loved it.” Abby said as she shared a little bit about her older brother’s trip.
“So, does this mean no road trip? Bummer, I was really hoping we could.” Hannah said with a little bit of disappointment in her voice.
“I mean I get back around the end of July, we could still do it, or we can just wait to do it next summer, since we all will be going to different colleges. It’ll be a good reunion.” Karolenia said as she thought about herself going to College of Charleston, Hannah going to the University of South Carolina, Abby going to Clemson University, and Rachel going to Midlands Technical College for a few years before hopefully transferring into medical school. It was going to be the first school year where they all weren’t at the same school, since they’ve known each other, and it was going to be really different; exciting, but different. They were going to desperately need to hang out for holidays and summers breaks. They were all like sisters, and to be apart for a whole year seemed a little bit nerve-racking.
“Yeah you’re right, just don’t get yourself kidnapped like in the movie “Taken” alright?” Hannah said as she thought about the suspenseful movie they all just watched over the weekend.
“Han, don’t scare her, she’ll be with her parents. It’ll be fine. We can’t wait to see all the pictures and hear about all the exciting European guys you’ll meet.” Rachel said with a smile as she gave both Hannah and Karolenia a hug.
“Okay y’all one last picture for the night. You all get together.” Several of the mothers said as the four girls huddled together to take a few last pictures before the party ended. Karolenia smiled, laughed, and made jokes with her three best friends. It was hard to imagine that in less than twelve hours she’d be on a plane to Europe for the summer, and it was even harder to imagine a life without having them in her life. She was excited about what was to come in the near future, trip, school, but was she was also a little nervous, frighten even in some ways. Could she make new friends? She’s thought to herself so many times before.
“Karo, we need to get going hun, long day tomorrow.” Karolenia heard her father say.
“Aww have a great time Karo!” Hannah said as she gave Karolenia a hug goodbye, as well as, other friends and their parents did.
Karolenia left the party with her parents, the perfect way to end the day her rite of passage within the world, and as she thought about graduation day and the days to come on the flight to Europe the next morning, she couldn’t help but to feel like fate or possibly destiny was calling to her. She looked out the window, clouds after clouds passing by in the darkness of the night, and as she felt the plane descending she could only feel a sort of familiarity to the country they were about to enter. Moments passed and before she knew it they were landing onto the concrete airstrip.
“Welcome to Romania, we hope you enjoy your stay. Have a good evening.” One of the female flight attendants spoke over the plane’s intercom.
“Karo, honey, when we get off the plane make sure you stay close, it’s supposed to be a busy airport.” Her mother said next to her. Karolenia looked back out the window; she felt the sudden wave of jet lag beginning to settle in. Row after row stood up and exited the plane, and as Karolenia and her family entered the airport it was as if watching everything in fast forward. She saw people rushing to catch their flights, people sitting down waiting, travelers such as Karolenia and her family looking at the signs trying to read the Romanian language then settling with the English translations. Karolenia thought passed the fact of how tired she was, and focused on following her parents to retrieve their luggage from the baggage claim area.
“Karo, keep up, I know you’re tired, but we’ll be at the hotel soon enough.” Her father said as he stopped so she could catch up. She walked quickly to catch up with them, and as she quickly glanced to her left, just passed her mother who watching her, a dark hooded figure came from just beyond the shadows of an open doorway to what looked like to be for storage. Even though she couldn’t see whether the figure was male or female or even see their face, she somehow got an eerie feeling that it was now watching her. Goosebumps came to her skin at the dark thought, and she had to look away.
“Karo, what’s the matter? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Karolenia’s mother asked softly as she looked behind herself and then back at her daughter.
Karolenia looked back at the door way, but instead of seeing the dark hooded figure again, she saw the dark shadows of janitorial supplies with in the room.
“Oh nothing, I guess I’m just really jet lagged.” Karolenia said with a small smile, as she looked back at her mother then began walking towards the baggage claim.
Moments later as soon as they had retrieved their luggage and were waiting for a car to take them to the airport, Karolenia’s mother begins to talk about all the places they were planning on visiting tomorrow and the next day will they stayed in Romania.
“Yeah that sounds really fun mom.” Karolenia said with a yawn, she was really excited, but as she just sat around waiting for a car, the lack of sleep was quickly taking its toll, and she felt her body beginning to desperately want sleep. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been up this long. She wasn’t able to sleep the night of her graduation because of being so excited for it, and again last night after the party she probably only had around two to three hours of sleep. Her body was exhausted, and like before she wondered if she was imagining the dark hooded figures that kept appearing in mysterious places. A few times she even asked her parents if they saw them, which they would just look at her with curious faces as they told her that they didn’t, and a few times her mother asked if she was feeling alright.
“Oh good there’s the car now. Come on Karo, let’s go, we’ll be at the hotel soon enough.” Karolenia’s mother said as she began to pick up some of the luggage as the taxi pulled up. As Karolenia got into the back of the taxi car with her mother she looked out the window seeing another or the same hooded figure she’d seen since arriving in Romania, and she just continued to stare at it. Could it see her? Was it watching her? What did it want? Was she seeing things? She thought as the car began to drive way from the airport and headed towards their hotel.
Soon enough just as her mother and father had promised they were finally at the hotel and she was finally able to go to sleep, her body seemed to almost thank her as she lay down on the white clean sheets and closed her eyes.
“Good night Karo, sweet dreams.” Her mother said from the other room of their hotel suite.
“Night mom,” she replied softly as sleep quickly overcame her.
Karolenia tried to think about tomorrow’s exciting events, yet as she fell deeper and deeper into her sleep, the images of graduation and plans of tomorrow quickly shifted into images of an elegant ball.
